Feeling Blue?
Feelings of depression can range from mild to severe. Research has found that pretty much everyone experiences depression at one time or another. The technical definition of depression is that it involves feelings of sadness that do not always have a reasonable cause and can be severe and long lasting. Depression can be helped by counseling as well as medication.
Some Causes of Depression
The causes of depression are also similar to the causes of general stress and may include: low self-esteem, relationship problems or divorce, loss of a loved one, traumatic events, problems with friends, problems at school, and loneliness, as well as sickness or injury.
Mental and Physical Symptoms
- Loss of interest in normal daily activities
- Depressed mood: feelings of sadness, hopelessness, helplessness, and crying spells
- Sleep disturbances
- Impaired thinking or concentration
- Acting out or getting in trouble
- Low self-esteem
- Changes in weight and appetite
- Agitation and irritability
- Fatigue or slowing of body movements
- Less interest in sex or less attraction
- Thoughts of death

- Depression can affect people in a variety of ways and is linked to several mental health conditions. It can be treated, at any age or stage, through counseling and sometimes with the additional assistance of medication.
