Parent's Tool Box

WSTC staff provides information to parents regarding effective communication with teens. They also review with young clients and community members the importance of discussing health concerns with their parents and caregivers. Our staff respectfully do not tell young people what is “right or wrong” regarding their personal behaviors, but we do tell them if we are impressed with their healthy choices, or not, which result in certain consequences.

How to help your young person stay healthy and be a good healthcare consumer:

  • Discuss your family health history, both mental and physical, with your child
  • Encourage teens to make their own appointments and fill out forms by themselves
  • Remind teens that they should spend some time alone with the healthcare provider to learn how to discuss personal matters without a parent’s input. The parent will be asked to join later if they’d like
  • If you have health insurance, let them carry a card and understand what co-pays and coverage is about
  • Be a good role model. Take care of yourself, make healthy choices and attend preventive healthcare appointments.
