The Becoming Program
Staying healthy during a pregnancy and creating a plan that works best for the pregnant, parenting or adoption planning young person.
WSTC public health nurses and social workers can help pregnant or parenting young people and their families:
- Learn about what the “next steps” are for one’s personal situation
- Stay healthy throughout a pregnancy
- Plan for the future including, completing school, job training, etc.
- Learn about medical insurance and financial resources
- Find other services needed, like prenatal or well-baby care, child care assistance, dental, mental health, crisis or chemical abuse counseling, etc.
- Prepare for labor & delivery
- Learn about taking care of babies and young children including breastfeeding, starting solids, sleeping, etc.
- Be the best parent he/she can be
Becoming Public Health Nurses
- Have experience working with young people and their families
- Listen
- Provide information and education in a non-judgmental and friendly way
- Will call and/or meet clients in their home, at school, the clinic, or some other convenient place
- Can assist a young person who is pregnant, has an adoption plan or is parenting a young child
- Visit clients who live in west Hennepin and Carver counties
- Provide these services for free. This program is funded mostly by the MN Department of Health Positive Alternatives grant
