Parent education
Children learn their values by observing the people who care for them. By seeing what you say and how you act, your child learns about your comfort level concerning sexuality issues. Sexuality education is not just about sex. Sexuality education includes sex, as well as the roles, behaviors and values people associate with being a man or a woman. Remember, SILENCE teaches louder than words. In Parents As Sexuality Educators classes, parents learn, discuss and share what age-appropriate communication skills and resources are available to assist parents and/or guardians become effective sexuality educators.
Class topics include:
- Why discuss Sexuality?
- Definitions: What does sex mean, anyway? And, abstinence?
- Teens: a brief developmental review of what physical, emotional, social changes are taking place. Brain development research.
- Trends: National, state, local research about what's going on in the teen population when it comes to sexual activity. Community clinic stories about real kids.
- Parental/adult Influence; research about the strong influence parents have on their child's decision making skills
- Family Communication Tips: How to get the conversations started
- Resources: handouts and sample books for both youth and their parents/trusted adult
